What Kinds of Conversations Should You Engage In?

Today I’d like to discuss what kinds of conversations business leaders should and shouldn’t engage in.

In the past few weeks, three new members have joined my team and I’m so grateful to be in partnership with these great professionals. 

As I’ve been training these new team members, an important question came up: What kinds of conversations should real estate leaders engage in with their team? 

The conversations that came to my mind immediately were things like how to prospect, how to generate leads, how to develop your business, and how to develop as an individual. Truthfully, as a leader, I’m always happy to engage in any conversation with my team that has to do with personal or professional growth. 

All of these conversations serve to help my team and myself avoid future issues and be proactive in our lives and business. On the business end of things, everything we do comes down to serving our clients at the highest level. Our aim is to exceed expectations. And if a circumstance arises where we’re unable to preemptively avoid an issue, we strive to solve problems quickly and effectively. 

With this all in mind, there are certain conversations you, as a leader, should not engage in. One prime example of this is gossip. In fact, gossip has no place in a positive work culture at all. 

Leaders should also avoid engaging in conversations that come from a place of victimhood. Sometimes, people don’t take responsibility for their own lives. We all have the opportunity to design our future. Of course, I’m not suggesting that we all come from the same circumstances. But while we can’t choose our circumstances, we can choose how we react to them. As a leader, I expect people who come to me with a problem to also come with two solutions. 

Much of what we’ve talked about today can apply not only to business, but also to life. You should be selective about which conversations you lend your attention to.
